Catching Up

So I finally have a little time to write in more detail about some of my Texas adventures. Pretend it's happening in real time and it will be more exciting. So after two days and 20 hours of driving without a passenger, I had begun talking to myself, my butt was past the numb point and moved on to the deep pains point, and I had listened to every CD I brought about 14 times. I thought I was going to lose it when I saw a sign for Bastrop (where we were headed) that said we only had 28 miles left. About another 45 minutes later we pulled up to the scout reservation where they had a cabin for us to stay in as long as we needed until we found our own place in the area Nate is director of. We pulled up to the little cabin and went to talk to the ranger inside. Now remember it was nighttime, I was exhausted, and really nervous about our new residence. As we were talking to the ranger he kept picking up these bugs flying around that were about the size of a bouncy ball and throwing them outside. Nate finally asked about them and he said, "They're june bugs. They don't bite or nothin they're just loud and a little obnoxious. You'll probably hear a few buzzin around in the toilet bowl now and then." .....WHAT?! Because I'm completely comfortable with HUGE flying insects buzzing around my bum!

So the ranger left and I kinda freaked out and me, Nate and Nate's brother Ryan drove into town to spend the night. I have never felt so secure in a Days Inn before. After some sleep, we got up and drove back to reasses the situation and it was so much better in the daylight. It was just bad timing when we first saw it. It was still bug infested, dirty, tiny, and missing a kitchen, but it was at least livable. We cleaned out the rooms (including the cobwebs covering the walls and ceilings) and unpacked as much as we could. We then cleaned the rest of the place and took half our stuff that wouldn't fit to a storage unit. That night we drove to Austin, but we didn't know our way around so we didn't see anything too exciting. We decided to find a BBQ place that was recommended to us called Rudy's and after that meal I was a changed woman. I have never considered myself a BBQ fanatic, but it was probably the best meal I have ever had. Anyone from around here gets mad when we say that is our favorite BBQ so far (there are BBQ places everywhere and everyone has an opinion on the best one) because it is a chain restaurant. Ya, and? We had brisket, cream corn (which I usually hate), potato salad, and the best BBQ sauce I've ever tasted. Don't be surprised if I send everyone some for Christmas or something. Anyway, back to the cabin. Nate had to work for the first time the next day, so me and Ryan cleaned until it was time to get my mom and Nate's mom from the airport with Taven. They came back and helped us clean for two days, we took them to experience Rudy's, and they all flew home Saturday. During that time my many accomplishments included killing some way-too-huge bugs, sweeping the aspestos cielings free of cobwebs, and actually getting to sleep every night. I say that because the next day we were talking to the ranger again and he was telling us a little fun fact about the cabin we were staying at - it was where they filmed the latest Jason movie "Friday the 13th." So you can all go rent that when it comes out and when you see some girl get slaughtered against a brick wall you can think, "Hey, I think that's where Stephanie lives." So let's just say it was the perfect backdrop for a horror movie and call it good.
So we got all finished moving in, buying shelving, organizing, and somewhat settled that week. A few days later, the ranger in charge of the camp let Nate know that the summer camp will be starting in a month and we needed to be out by then so they could use the cabin for the staff. So the sooner we were out the better. We had been planning on being there for about six months, so now what? Cliffhanger, huh?
