Sweating It Out in Texas
Recently, Nate and I decided to stop at an old historic building that was giving tours as a museum. It turned out to be an old prison. The bottom floor of the building was used as housing quarters for the sheriff and his family. I have never seen anything like this place! The kids lived below all the jail cells and the wife was responsible for cooking the prisoners three meals a day. The bottom rooms were filled with all kinds of donated antiques that were most likely items used during the time there. Everything looked so old I thought it couldn't have been open past the 1940's-1950's, but the owner informed us the jail wasn't shut down until 1986! After touring the bottom level, the owner handed us a flashlight and said we get to explore the upstairs by ourselves. We went through a huge metal door that creaked so loud it hurt and toured what I think is the creepiest legal place I have ever been in! All the cells look straight out of a horror movie with writing all over the walls from former inmates (along with some new additives from people letting everyone else know they were there). Each cell housed about 12 people at a time, all sharing one public toilet and shower. Then there was one cell at the top that was for some type of solitary confinement, but it was a lot bigger with all your own facilities and a bunch of windows. I would be shankin everyone I could get my hands on if I were there so I could be sent to the suite upstairs. The thing that freaked me out most about the place is that there was no air conditioning. So during the summers it was just a hundred stinky men, sweating and sharing the same toilet, all within the same 2 foot space. There are days when it gets so hot WITH air conditioning that I almost punch Nate for entering my personal bubble and adding body heat. Most the time I am not too delusional to actually punch him so don't worry, no real violence here. Here are some pics of the jail. Best two dollars I have spent since I've been here!
